Product Overview

The WAGO 750-338 is a CANopen fieldbus coupler that connects the modular WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM 750/753 as a slave node to a CANopen network. In practical terms it is the head station of a distributed I/O island: it takes any combination of digital, analog and special-function modules that the designer has snapped onto the DIN rail, builds a local process image out of them, and exchanges that image with the CANopen master through process data objects and service data objects. Because the WAGO 750-338 detects the connected modules automatically during start-up and maps their data in the physical order of assembly, engineering effort stays low even when a node mixes temperature inputs, counter modules, valve terminals and standard digital channels. What makes the WAGO 750-338 distinct within the WAGO coupler family is its 9-pole D-Sub fieldbus interface, which suits installations where a rugged, shielded, screw-locked CAN connector is preferred over the pluggable MCS terminal used by its sibling 750-337. The unit is built for cabinet and machine environments: a 24 V DC system supply with wide tolerance, galvanic isolation of 500 V between the system and field sides, and CAGE CLAMP spring connections that stay vibration-proof without retightening. Up to 64 I/O modules can follow the coupler on one node, and up to 110 nodes can be attached to a single master, so the WAGO 750-338 scales from a handful of signals in a packaging machine to plant-wide remote I/O drops.

Main Features and Advantages

Plug-and-play node assembly: The WAGO 750-338 removes almost every manual addressing step from commissioning. On power-up it scans the internal bus, recognises each I/O module by its electronic type code, and assembles a local process image automatically. Digital signals are packed bit by bit and, once more than eight bits accumulate, the coupler starts a new byte; analog and speciality modules are transferred as words or bytes in the order they are mounted. The result is that a technician can extend or re-arrange a node mechanically and the coupler rebuilds the image without a single DIP-switch or software address change.Flexible CANopen data mapping: With 32 transmit and 32 receive PDOs, two SDO servers and free mapping of every object dictionary entry, the WAGO 750-338 adapts to the master’s expectations instead of forcing the master to adapt to it. Variable PDO mapping, edge-triggered PDOs, limit value monitoring and a configurable response in the event of an error allow designers to build lean, event-driven communication rather than wasting bandwidth on a fixed cyclic image, while emergency messages and life guarding give the controller immediate visibility of node health.Robust industrial design: Isolation of 500 V between the system and field sides, plus a DC/DC converter and optocouplers on the CAN interface, keeps the WAGO 750-338 stable in cabinets shared with drives and contactors. Its 24 V DC supply tolerates -25 % to +30 %, so voltage dips during motor starting do not reset the node. CAGE CLAMP spring terminals hold conductors from 0.08 to 2.5 mm² without periodic retightening, the housing of polycarbonate and polyamide 6.6 resists shock and vibration to 4 g and 15 g respectively, and the compact 50.5 mm width keeps panel space requirements low.Clear diagnostics and easy service: LEDs for RUN, STOP, Tx/Rx overflow and I/O status, together with separate indicators for system and field voltage, tell a maintenance engineer at a glance whether the WAGO 750-338 is operational, in STOP state, suffering buffer overflow or reporting a module fault. A configuration interface behind the front flap allows firmware updates and parameter work with WAGO-I/O-CHECK, and because the coupler is a pure head station, replacing it does not disturb the wiring of the I/O modules behind it.
