In an automotive welding cell with multiple IRB 6700 robots, operator safety is paramount. The cell is surrounded by perimeter fencing with interlocked safety gates, equipped with emergency stop buttons at multiple stations, and features a presence-sensing light curtain at a material loading station. All these safety devices must be integrated into a failsafe system that brings the robots to a safe, controlled stop in milliseconds if a breach is detected. The ABB SIB-01 safety board inside the IRC5 controller cabinet is the critical hub that makes this possible. It receives the dual-channel signals from all these safety devices via the DSQC 652 or DSQC 1030 I/O units. The SIB-01 processes these signals and communicates directly with the robot’s main computer and drive system via a dedicated, high-integrity safety bus. If a gate opens, the SIB-01 instantly and reliably signals the system to halt motion.
