Application Scenarios:
In a smart water distribution facility, flow, pressure, and quality sensors are scattered across multiple pump houses. Instead of running thousands of meters of analog cable to a central control room, a local I/O station is installed in each pump house. The ABB SMIO-01C CPU Board is the brain of each station. It connects locally to analog and digital I/O modules that interface directly with the field instruments. The SMIO-01C then runs localized control logic (e.g., pump start/stop sequences) and communicates aggregated, processed data to the central SCADA system via an industrial network like PROFIBUS DP or Modbus TCP. This architecture, enabled by the SMIO-01C, dramatically reduces wiring costs, improves signal integrity by processing data locally, and allows for autonomous operation of each pump house even if the central network is temporarily lost. It directly addresses the pain points of scalability, installation cost, and system resilience in distributed applications.
