Application Scenarios:
In a large chemical complex running on an Advant OCS, a critical batch reactor unit required the addition of several new process loops for a product line expansion. The existing controller cabinet had no spare I/O capacity. Rather than installing a whole new controller, the engineering team deployed a remote S800 I/O station in a junction box near the reactor. The brain of this remote station is the ABB SNAZ-7120J circuit board, installed in a dedicated rack. This board is configured as a PROFIBUS-DP slave. It connects via a high-speed, noise-immune PROFIBUS cable back to the master communication module in the main controller room. The SNAZ-7120J then manages all local I/O modules (like analog input cards for temperature and pressure) in its rack, efficiently polling data and packaging it for transmission. It solved the challenge of scalable, long-distance I/O expansion without overloading the main controller’s backplane, demonstrating its role as a robust and intelligent field concentrator for distributed process control architectures.
