Application Scenario
At an LNG export terminal in Qatar, a fire & gas detection system uses over 200 ICS T9110 modules to monitor flame detectors, gas sensors, and manual call points. During a routine test, a technician simulated a cable cut on a hydrogen sensor loop. Within 50 ms, the T9110’s diagnostic logic flagged a “wire break” fault—but because the other two redundant channels remained healthy, the system continued to operate without triggering a false shutdown. Only when two channels failed simultaneously would an actual trip occur. This fail-operational behavior prevented a $ 2M/hour production loss while maintaining full safety integrity—showcasing the T9110’s role in balancing availability and risk.

Technical Innovation & Value
Innovation 1: True Hardware TMR Architecture
Unlike software-based redundancy, the T9110 uses three physically separate input circuits and processors, eliminating common-cause failures.
Innovation 2: Advanced Line Monitoring
Continuously checks for open wires, shorts, and ground leakage—even on de-energized contacts—ensuring “proof test coverage” without manual intervention.
Innovation 3: Seamless Integration with 800xA High Integrity
Fully supported in ABB’s modern DCS, allowing unified HMI, alarm management, and asset monitoring alongside basic process control.
Innovation 4: Cyber-Secure Legacy Design
As a hardware-based safety module with no Ethernet port, it’s inherently immune to network-based cyber threats—a key advantage in OT security.
Common Use Cases
Emergency Shutdown (ESD) systems in refineries
Burner Management Systems (BMS) in power boilers
High-Integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS)
Offshore platform fire & gas detection
Nuclear plant reactor protection interfaces

Maintenance & Lifecycle Notes
The T9110 is still widely used but considered mature/legacy; ABB recommends migration planning to AC 800Hi or System 800xA with new TMR I/O for new projects.
Modules can be refurbished and recertified to SIL 3 standards by authorized service centers.
Always replace in triplicate (all three legs) if one fails, to maintain redundancy balance.
We supply tested-used, refurbished, and new surplus ICS T9110 (3BSE022564R1) modules, each verified for:
Channel-by-channel input response
Diagnostic fault simulation
Backplane communication integrity
LED and status reporting accuracy
Includes compatibility report for Tricon v10/v11 systems.
