In a combined-cycle power plant, precise monitoring of gas and steam turbine rotational speed is paramount for protection, control, and efficiency. A magnetic pickup or proximity sensor mounted on the turbine shaft generates a sine wave or pulse train whose frequency corresponds directly to the shaft’s RPM. The ABB SDCS-PIN-51 card, installed in the Advant Controller rack, is specifically tasked with receiving this signal. It conditions the raw input, converts the frequency to a precise digital value representing speed, and makes it available to the control logic. This allows the DCS to perform critical overspeed protection, load balancing, and performance calculations. Without the accurate, high-speed acquisition provided by the SDCS-PIN-51, implementing reliable turbine protection would be significantly more complex and less secure.
