Main Features and Advantages
Four excitation modes in one module. The Allen-Bradley 1407-CGCM is built around a flexible excitation engine that supports AVR for fully automatic terminal-voltage control, FCR for manual or field-current regulation, power-factor control, and VAR (reactive-power) control. This means the same module can hold bus voltage during isolated island operation, hold a fixed power factor when exporting to the utility, or hold a scheduled MVAR level for grid-support contracts—without changing hardware. Adjustable soft-start voltage ramp-up prevents the high inrush and field-forcing that can stress a brushless exciter during generator start, while independent over-excitation (OEL) and under-excitation (UEL) limiters constrain the operating region across all four modes.Generator paralleling and precise load sharing. The Allen-Bradley 1407-CGCM performs real-power load sharing and reactive-power distribution when generators are paralleled, using either reactive droop compensation or cross-current (reactive differential) compensation. The result is stable, predictable sharing of both active and reactive load across units, avoiding the circulating-current and VAR-oscillation problems that commonly occur when multiple generators are simply connected in parallel without coordinated excitation control.One- and two-breaker synchronization with phase, voltage, and frequency matching. Built-in automatic synchronization matches phase angle, voltage magnitude, and frequency before issuing a breaker close command, supporting both a single generator breaker and a two-breaker configuration (for example, generator-to-bus and bus-to-utility). The module distinguishes dead-bus from live-bus synchronization and applies the appropriate logic in each case, providing a safe, repeatable close decision rather than relying on operator judgment.Full-scope generator protection without a separate relay. A complete protection suite—over/under voltage, over/under frequency, reverse power, reverse VAR, loss of excitation, over-excitation voltage, phase rotation error, overcurrent, and rotating-diode and loss-of-sensing monitoring—runs concurrently with excitation and synchronization. Because all three functions share the same sensing inputs and microprocessor, protection settings, metering, and control logic remain consistent and easier to maintain than a mixed-vendor stack of separate devices.Redundancy for continuous operation. Dual ControlNet ports and a dedicated RS-232 redundant-link port allow two Allen-Bradley 1407-CGCM modules to track one another and automatically transfer to the backup unit on fault detection. Auto-tracking between operating modes and redundant units, combined with bumpless transfer, means the standby module takes over without a step change in excitation—an essential capability in critical standby and cogeneration systems where a control hiccup cannot be allowed to trip the generator.Built for the switchgear environment. Vertical mounting with the specified side and top/bottom clearances for heat-sink cooling, all-copper wiring with a recommended 1 N·m terminal torque, and certification for Class I Division 2 and ATEX Zone 2 make the Allen-Bradley 1407-CGCM suitable for installation directly in low-voltage generator control switchgear.
