Product Overview

The Kongsberg MRU-M-SU1 is a compact,high-performance Motion Reference Unit(MRU)developed by Kongsberg Maritime(formerly part of Seatex AS,acquired by Kongsberg)for precise measurement of six degrees of freedom(6DoF)vessel or platform motion. It is widely deployed in dynamic positioning(DP),offshore construction, hydrographic survey,ROV/AUV operations, and motion-compensated crane or sonar systems.

Unlike basic attitude sensors, the MRU-M-SU1 combines a temperature-stabilized MEMS-based Inertial Measurement Unit(IMU)with advanced signal processing to deliver real-time,drift-corrected motion data—including heave(vertical displacement)—even in high-sea states. While it does not include an internal GNSS receiver,it is designed to fuse external GNSS heading/position data(e.g.,from a Kongsberg Seapath or GPS compass)to enhance long-term stability and enable full 6DoF output(surge, sway, yaw).

The“SU1”suffix denotes the standard user-configurable variant with flexible output protocols and mounting options, distinguishing it from application-specific versions(e.g.,SU2 for subsea,or OEM modules).

Housed in a rugged IP66-rated aluminum enclosure, the MRU-M-SU1 withstands salt spray, humidity, and shock per DNVGL,ABS,and IEC 60945 maritime standards. Its compact size(approx.150×100×70 mm)and low weight(~1.2 kg)make it ideal for space-constrained installations on small vessels,USVs,or portable survey systems.

⚠️Note:The MRU-M-SU1 does not output true yaw without an external heading source. For full 6DoF,it must be integrated with a GNSS compass or INS like the Kongsberg Seapath 330+.

Main Features and Advantages

High Heave Fidelity:Advanced filtering(adaptive wave spectrum estimation)ensures reliable heave data even in confused seas—critical for multibeam echosounder or laser scanning.

Plug-and-Play Compatibility:Pre-integrated with Kongsberg DP systems,EM series sonars,HUGIN AUVs,and third-party platforms via standard protocols.

Low Latency:<5 ms output delay enables use in real-time motion compensation(e.g.,for cranes or stabilized cameras).

Robust Environmental Design:No moving parts;solid-state MEMS with thermal control ensures long-term reliability with minimal maintenance.

Easy Calibration:Factory-calibrated;field verification possible via built-in diagnostics and Kongsberg’s MRU Toolbox software.

Application Field

The MRU-M-SU1 is used in:

Dynamic Positioning(DP):Providing motion input to DP control algorithms for offshore vessels.

Hydrographic Survey:Compensating multibeam and side-scan sonar data for vessel motion.

ROV/AUV Support:Surface vessel motion reference for launch/recovery or tether management.

Offshore Wind:Jack-up vessel leg penetration monitoring and crane compensation.

Scientific Research:Wave buoy emulation, oceanographic platform stabilization.

Defense&Navy:USV/USW operations requiring precise motion awareness.

It is especially favored where cost, size, and reliability must be balanced against performance—bridging the gap between low-cost AHRS and high-end fiber-optic INS.

Installation and Maintenance

Installation Best Practices:

Mount as close as possible to the vessel’s center of motion(typically amidships).

Use anti-vibration mounts to isolate from engine/machinery noise.

Align the unit’s X-axis with the vessel’s fore-aft direction(verify via label).

Keep cables away from VFDs,radar,or high-power RF sources.

Maintenance Recommendations:

Perform annual verification using static level check or known reference.

Inspect seals and connectors for corrosion in saltwater environments.

Update firmware via Ethernet using MRU Toolbox when new features are released.

Store powered off in dry conditions if unused for>6 months.
