Application Scenarios

A paper-mill press section was protected by a conventional safety relay system that monitored guard doors and e-stop contacts, but had no safety-rated visibility of the press roll speed. The speed feedback came from a 4–20 mA tachometer signal feeding a standard analog input, which was read only by the standard control task. The limitation was structural: a worn coupling or a failing sensor could not produce a safety demand, because the safety system could not see the value that defined the hazard. The mill added a 1734-IE4S in a POINT Guard I/O node at the press-end panel, with the tachometer signal landed on one channel and two pressure transmitters on the remaining channels. The module’s tachometer mode accepts 0–24 V input at 1–1000 Hz with configurable ON/OFF thresholds, which allowed the safety task to evaluate a safe-speed condition directly rather than relying on the standard controller to pass it a value. During commissioning, the built-in diagnostics caught a degraded shield termination on one pressure loop — flagged as an input fault rather than reported as a steady reading — before it could affect the safety function. The mill’s safety validation was completed without replacing the existing GuardLogix controller; the module dropped into the same POINT I/O physical footprint already occupied by standard I/O.The significance is that analog safety is not simply “a more accurate digital input.” Many hazards are continuous in nature — overspeed, overpressure, excess temperature, high level — and the safety decision depends on the magnitude and rate of change of a measured value. A discrete safety input cannot represent that. The 1734-IE4S provides a certified path for those variables into the safety task, so the protection function and the process control function can share the same transmitter rather than requiring a separate dedicated sensor.
